In 2013 NBCAI secured three mutually
reinforcing grants that support urgently needed information exchange between
climate scientists and local resource decision-makers such as government
planners, water suppliers, natural lands managers, and fire managers. Funders
include the State Coastal Conservancy, North Bay Watershed Association, and
Sonoma County’s Climate Action 2020 plan. With these resources available to
NBCAI, the credibility we’ve gained during the last few years, and world events
raising the level of urgency in climate planning, 2013 brought an entirely new
level of momentum to climate response efforts in Sonoma County and the North
Bay. This funding marks a turning point in NBCAI’s viability as a
collaborative, because entities beyond Community Foundation Sonoma County are now
investing in NBCAI’s efforts. In addition to turning this major corner, we
implemented a communications strategy developed in 2012, broadly circulated our
well-regarded Climate Smart North Bay fact sheets, presented at the first National
Adaptation Forum, built promising new partnerships with local government and
Resource Conservation Districts, and co-developed a long-term climate change
monitoring program. As a catalyst for change, NBCAI’s success is measured not
only by the funding and projects we are directly part of, but also by the
climate adaptation projects developed at an accelerating rate by our partner
organizations. Looking back at our five-year logic model created at the end of
2012, we made substantial progress.
